Coloplast Purilon Hydrogel Wound Dressing (15g) is a sterile hydrogel used for wound care, particularly in managing wounds that contain dead or necrotic tissue. It comes in a 15g tube and is designed to help soften and hydrate the wound bed, making it easier for the body to naturally remove non-viable tissue through a process called autolytic debridement. This helps prepare the wound for healing while maintaining a moist environment, which is essential for tissue regeneration.
The gel is made from purified water, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, and calcium alginate. It does not contain any unnecessary additives, which makes it gentle and suitable even for sensitive or delicate wounds. The 15g version is packaged in a tube with an accordion-style applicator, allowing for easy, one-handed, and sterile application directly onto the wound.
Purilon is especially useful in dry wounds or wounds with light to moderate exudate. It’s often used for pressure ulcers, leg ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers (as long as they are not infected), and minor burns. However, it’s not suitable for very wet or heavily exuding wounds because the gel can become diluted and lose effectiveness. It also shouldn’t be used alone on infected wounds, as it doesn’t contain any antimicrobial agents.
Before applying the gel, the wound should be cleaned properly. After application, it’s important to cover it with a secondary dressing to maintain the right environment for healing. The frequency of dressing changes depends on the wound condition, but typically it’s changed every 1 to 3 days or as recommended by a healthcare provider.
